Winter Manifesto, a season of romance
Forget coldness and scarcity.
This winter’s about abundance and warmth.
We will traipse.
We will have rosy cheeks and flyaway hair.
We will lounge in pj’s and stay in bed.
Childhood nostalgia will be our theme.
We will smile at strangers.
We will be spots of sunshine on gray days.
We will embrace weakness in ourselves and others.
Kindness and cocoa will be our gift.

a poem
Let us stop our hem-hawing
hee-hawing
hoo-hahing
And let us instead
assemble "likes"
and "umms"
and "anyways"
into bumbling, run-on
unselfconscious
unpretentious sentences--
Sentences that help people
drop their shoulders
and breath a sigh of relief
from endless posturing
We'll spark a change and others will join us
Instead of hall passes,
we teachers will hand out respite passes
Permission for others to escape
from homeroom brilliance
We'll let them meander through halls,
remembering (if only for a moment)
that they need not be the smartest
the most refined
or the most clever
to be in our class

What we'll do
We'll keep thinking big.
We'll not only keep hoping-hoping-hoping, we'll quit wishing away time. We'll hatch escape plans and shake up our routines. We'll hold out for a good thing.
And we'll stop incessantly checking our email--we'll silence our cell phones and shut our computers. Instead, we'll take long walks and breathe in the lilacs. We'll tell stories. We'll dance and grow strong with push-ups. We'll trade sucking in our stomachs for big, belly laughs.
We'll broadcast wildflower seeds and eat crunchy apples. And we'll keep maturing. We'll resist turning disappointment into tragedy. We'll exercise curiosity, ask people questions and forgive them when they don't ask us.
That's what we'll do.
