thank you

Thank you for snow days.

For my arms carrying a load of firewood.
For my lungs breathing deeply.
For warm blood making its way to my fingertips.
For my cold nose and rosy cheeks.
For my healthy body.
For the birds that just...keep...singing.
For gratitude like my mom's.
And for soup, cookies and simplicity.

Thank you for snow days.

The Problem with Paint

The problem with paint is beyond the materials.
She knows how to handle acrylic tubes, fiber brushes and stretched canvases. You see, the problem with paint is beyond which color to use, what mark to make or even how to find the time.

The problem with paint is that it reflects the painter.
Rainbow palettes show her indecisiveness, low contrast shows her uncertainty and mushy planes show her unwillingness to commit.
She is fearful.

But she forgets that painting is on her side.
She forgets that painting reflects her fortitude, her thirst for beauty and her willingness to be in process.
She is strengthened.

Winter Manifesto, a season of romance

Forget coldness and scarcity.

This winter’s about abundance and warmth.

We will traipse.

We will have rosy cheeks and flyaway hair.

We will lounge in pj’s and stay in bed.

Childhood nostalgia will be our theme.

We will smile at strangers.

We will be spots of sunshine on gray days.

We will embrace weakness in ourselves and others.

Kindness and cocoa will be our gift.

side by side

The above image is a photo taken at Lake Union.
The waves reminded me of Vija Celmin's Untitled
drawing of water. Her image is below.

a poem

Let us stop our hem-hawing
hee-hawing
hoo-hahing

And let us instead
assemble "likes"
and "umms"
and "anyways"
into bumbling, run-on
unselfconscious
unpretentious sentences--

Sentences that help people
drop their shoulders
and breath a sigh of relief
from endless posturing

We'll spark a change and others will join us

Instead of hall passes,
we teachers will hand out respite passes
Permission for others to escape
from homeroom brilliance

We'll let them meander through halls,
remembering (if only for a moment)
that they need not be the smartest
the most refined
or the most clever
to be in our class

presentation: 10 out of 10

No, this is not a Better Homes & Gardens stock photo.
This cake currently exists on a plate in my kitchen.
Props to Amy and Karlie for making such a beautiful, birthday creation for Brenna.

summer fare

The color of the containers (I'll be saving them) next to the color of blueberries is just too good. Who knew that I could love a carton of blueberries so much?!
